Day Twelve - “We walked in the cold air <pew pew>”
Last night might just be peak TMAAT not just on this adventure but on any of our many forays across Europe….I know, bold talk right…hear me out.
First off Wachau Camping Rossatz is in a truly spectacular spot right on the banks of the Danube, in the Wachau region and overlooking Kremsor Tor on the other side of the river. I haven’t done proper research ( I have been busy with some other stuff!) but apparently there are two monastery’s there and Richard the Lionheart is “allegedly” (I have to say that for legal reasons….I really don’t need any living descendants suing me for defamation) supposed to have either stayed / been held captive / born / married / died there (it’s v tricky to be certain about these things you know). Perhaps even more importantly for TMAAT the showers and loos are clean, spacious and work plus there is a really great restaurant within 50m where we spend our entire evening drinking Aperol Spritz and eating Weiner Schnitzel (well you have to!).
It really is a great evening made even better by the knowledge that we have less than 60 miles to get through tomorrow to make it to Vienna.
Given the reduced mileage and the temperature (forecast for 30) we allow ourselves a mini lay in and then head off around 7am.
The going is fast and flat and we cruise the countryside pausing only a couple of times for a brief break, a visit to the bushes for some “tinkle time” or for some food. We both remark how different it is to be able to cycle +15 miles at a time without pausing compared to the horrors of Day 6, 7, 8 and of course Day 9 <shudder> when could barely make it a few minutes before grabbing some shade and recovery.
Such is our excitement about the prospect of clean clothes and a full day off we fly through the miles and arrive at our campsite around 2pm having smashed all 59 miles for the day.
The campsite is “functional” but really only that, although no matter …it has all that we need and most notably enough square acreage for us to spread all our stuff everywhere and it has washing machines.
As we settle down for the afternoon and dry our clothes we start to chat about what we might do tomorrow ….but perhaps I will tell you about that tomorrow.
I can’t lie I am feeling super proud of Marc and I right now ….we have clocked just over 1000 miles now from my front door in SW London and we have really “endured” some stuff, particularly at the hands of the weather Gods. There was more than one point where it seemed really doubtful to me that we would get this far and yet…..TMAAT prevails!
Will write some more tomorrow and let you know which touristy things we elected for in Vienna (aaaaah!).
